I mean whatever works, but I know that thing has to weigh a ton! These things have steel bodies and from experience I know that without a huge battery pack they are very heavy for a bike. I do realize the practicality of buying a cheap department store bike if you aren't going to be a serious rider, but once you ride a reputable bike its like night and day.

The 15amp limit is per battery in a parallel configuration. ie with a 4 battery 72 volt config you could do 30 amps, or with a 4 battery 36 volt config you could do 60 amps. Need more amps? just add another parallel string. I do a 6 battery 72 volt configuration as the controller I use comes too close to the 30 amp limit of a 4 pack configuration.

It is only a 3 speed. I pretty much just leave it in the highest gear. On another note, if you decide to try and make one of these, the dewalt packs have a 15amp internal fuse, so make sure you dont exceed 15amps per pack, or you will blow the fuse like I did. It is fixable though if you happen to do it.

I found the ecrazyman conrollers to be a very good deal. I use the ecrazyman direct from china 72 volt controller with a wilderness energy brushless front hub. You were my inspiration and I copied the basic design of your bike on a walmart schwinn commuter bike. I also use the dewalt packs in a 72 volt setup, and have thus far put over 3000 miles on it. A very worthwhile project. Especially when gas was over $4 a gallon.

I don't leave the batteries on the bike when it is parked for long downtown. I once had to carry them past security at our municipal building. I first walked up to the guards without the batteries to explain what they were because they look just like a home made bomb, then went back to get them.

This combination is good for about 25 miles. Only takes 45 min to recharge. I couldn't ask for more. I don't really want to ride my bike more than that in a single sitting! Lead acid batteries last about a year or so, weigh too much, and their voltage drops as they discharge, making you slower and slower.

They call that an electric MOTOR for a reason.... because my professors at MIT would say there's no such thing as an "electric engine". PS, the definition of "engine" is 200+ years old. Also nuclear power plants create zero greenhouse gasses and the electricity is really cheap to create. Using Clean solar/wind/tidal/Water Damn or even Nuclear power to fuel this process you get hydrogen and oxygen. When the two a burnt, or used in a fuel cell process only water is created as a waste product. The reason I classify nuclear as a clean energy source is the sheer amount of power to waste ratio is so high its in comparison as if a coal plant only produced 100lb of CO2 emissions a year.

Then i think we are in agreement. Getting hydrogen from fossil fuel is not clean. Same argument on electric cars that get energy from a coal-fired power plant. If these people cannot get clean hydrogen or electricity, simply use gas without going through two lossy conversions. Hydroelectric, wind power, and solar power can produce clean hydrogen.

You are QUITE WRONG. Today's hydrogen fuel is made from natural gas, a fossil fuel, it would be easier to use gas....the pipe lines and stations are here already. My above answer implies hydrogen from fossil fuels would defeat the purpose of conserving the earth. How am I wrong??? @Kingcammel you are not burning Hydrogen with oxygen, you are using hydrogen with oxygen to produce an electrical current by way of a fuel cell. There are about eight different types of fuel cells. the byproduct of creating an electrical charge by pumping hydrogen into one side of the cell and O2 in to the other side with the use of a solid electrolite is water which in turn can be used to start the whole process over.

Of course, a hydrogen leak is dangerous for sure. When compared to gasoline, hydrogen is relatively safer. Hydrogen rises and dissipates quickly. It has an ignition switch so you can turn it off and take the key and make it a little harder for someone to ride off with. Maybe keep your kid from trying to ride it and hurting himself? But hey if you're not worried about that just leave it on all the time. Plus, an electric scooter, since it has no gas engine that makes noise when its running, if left on and some unsuspecting person grabs it by the throttle and just happens to turn it will get a very nasty surprise, don't you think?

I bought mine in June this year. £5,500 all in, delivered to my door. I've had 1,100 trouble free miles and it's been great. When I get home I reverse it into my garage and plug it in to a timer that gives it 3 hour charging window in the early hours. It's even cheaper then. 20 pence for a full charge which gives me 50 miles on average.

Great idea and technology, pity the engineering in the three planetary gears and the ring gear in the rear wheel can be random with tolerances. Check to make sure you can hear a constant sound from the motor not an intermittent one. The large ring gear can sometimes be out of round, probably a Monday morning or Friday afternoon assembled one.

I got one about two weeks ago. This maxi-scooter is a blast to ride. Top speed is about 63 mph. The range varies based on how fast you ride. Typically I am averaging about 40 miles per charge. I have a charge meter on my outlet to measure the cost. About 35 cents to recharge the battery. 4 or 5 hours to completely recharge (and balance cells) from empty. 3 hours to get it mostly full enough to go. This is the perfect scooter for commuting in your nearby region. Freedom from gasoline.

(true for all batteries) Gel cell batterys (typical of the e-bikes...) usually go bad due to shelf life before they go bad from being cycled, so there's not a lot of data regarding how many cycles they can get in real life. Don't overcharge Don't over-discharge and don't get the batteries too hot... you'll get a lot of cycles. So the question beconmes... how hot do the batteries get?

When ever we get a shipment going to Canada we ship up the bike with a 500 watt motor installed in it since Canada's maximum allowed wattage is 500 watts. The speed remains the exact same as if it had the larger motor, you will not see ANY difference at all. Everything is controlled from the "controller" or brain so it's perfectly legal in the USA or Canada and goes the same speed in both versions.

The only bike that costs 1500+ is the XB-700 which runs on 26 lithium batteries but you don't have to get that one when you can get this one for under $1000 or if you want to spend less go for the XB-502 and spend around $700. Check with your state or city but it should be legal for you to ride. I would say if it's illegal for you to ride a bicycle then you cannot ride this but I don't know of any states or cities that don't allow kids to ride bicycles, so I would not expect you to have a problem.

Videos like this make me wonder if people actually watch their own videos before posting them. Nothing against the bike. It's probably pretty cool, but all I saw, for the most part, was blurry dirt moving past partially obscured by the bar pad. It's just horrible camera work. If people would just take the time to make decent videos they'd be much more worth watching. Show the bike from a distance, moving on the dirt, using a stable camera position. Way better than this crap.

So I think that in the years ahead reliability will be one of the great strengths of the electric. I have a Honda gas scooter. It goes 41mph and I can drive around all week on $2.00 worth of gas. I drove it to work today. It doesn't have to be charged, I can drive as far as I want. Parts are cheap, The battery was $19.00. It has 1 spark plug that costs $2.00 the air filter is washable. It is a 1983 scooter and starts up flawlessly after 26 years. This is the way to go for your short commutes, school, etc. I ride mine to the office which is close - I am the envy up there. They call? me Mr. Green. Got it at xtremescooters4u and they shipped it right away. About the price of a decent bike, so its a no brainer. And yes, its considered a bike, not a moped or motorcycle.

Actually, you can mod any of the XB product line. You can swap out hub motors, controllers, better and/or more batteries, install DC-DC converters and audio equipment, and the same shunt mod that works on DIY 36 / 48 volt eBikes will work on the XB bikes too (gives better hill climbing, but it drains the battery pack faster)

Yes, that is true, but this vehicle isn't a scooter or moped, its classified under the 3 year trial study of motor assisted bicycles, which states clearly, that vehicles under this classification must have operating pedals at all times, a motor wattage under 500W, travel no more than 32Km/hr, and have some sort of signage declaring the vehicle as a motor assisted vehicle.

What state was your guy in that got the ticket? I can assure you that the ticket will not stick, all he needs to do is bring the federal law and depending on which state he is in, his state law in to the judge that show's they are LEGAL in the state and he will be off the hook. Of course it's a hassle, your dealing with some cop who thinks he knows everything and he thinks that because it "looks like a moped" that it is a moped and he's wrong and it can be easily proven.

I failed three driving tests on "hesitation" (for fuck sake...) the price of a car and fuel in the UK is astronomical ! Go back in to the MTO (what is an MTO?) and ask them if they require a license for an electric power assist bicycle. You have to specify bicycle. They probably won't even know what your talking about, which generally means there is no requirement since we cannot find any requirement in any state anywhere, however we do find many states that say e-powered bicycles need nothing to ride, just follow the laws of a bicycle. The fed's back that up as well.

No, partcentpc, if you remove the pedals, it will be a scooter. A moped has to have peddles that's what the "ped" in moped stands for. If it has pedals and a motor it is a moped. If it has no pedals and a motor it is a motorcycle or a scooter.

If your 6 foot you can ride this no problem but if you want some extra space spend a little more and get the XB-600 instead. If you look on google for "xb-600 shunt " and do a search, you can find out how to make your XB-600 do 35 MPH by adding 2 extra batteries and making 1 small modification. There are 100's of people who modify these e-bikes to run in the 30's, if speed is what you need.
